| The B.O.C Allstars performance late Sunday night offered a perfect
finale to Jazz Fest 2011. It was another rare gathering of musicians that could only be possible once a year in New Orleans, the time and place when everyone’s busy schedules intersect. |
Led by Nikki
Glaspie (best known for her work as Beyonce’s drummer), the group
featured an all star cast including members of Lettuce, Warren Haynes
Band, Slightly Stoopid, and other special guests popping in and out.

The crowd didn’t begin showing up in earnest to Siberia on St Claude
until a little after 2am. People were looking for a last chance to
dance on the final night of Jazz Fest, and the band did not
disappoint. The B.O.C All-stars effortlessly broke out the funk,
grooving through old school numbers by favorites such as Parliament
and Bill Withers. Big Sam stopped by to blow his trombone alongside
Maurice Brown on Trumpet. A couple hours into it the club was rocking
and showed no signs of slowing down, but the police arrived just
before dawn due to a noise complaint. Nobody seemed ready to go home,
Nigel Hall was petitioning to do a solo acoustic set, local guitarist
Ciff Hines eagerly was awaiting his chance to sit in, and the crowd
continued to hang around for a while in disbelief that the night was
over (despite the sunlight already coming in).
But alas, there would be no second set. Jazz Fest officially ended at
this moment, as the last live music performance in the city came to a
close. It should be noted that Officer Rooney was extremely
respectful and pleasant, and no animosity interrupted the good vibes.
Over a mellow keyboard solo, Nikki laments to the crowd (or is she
bragging?) how this is her 8th time getting shut down by NOPD during
2011 Jazz Fest. It will be a tough a benchmark for anyone to top next
year.
